Conoco nears major deal with Lukoil

In an effort to gain a greater share of the world market, U.S. oil company ConocoPhillips is in the process of closing a deal with major Russian petroleum player OAO Lukoil. The deal, which would increase investor confidence in Russia's petroleum industry, has received approval from Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Major oil companies in Russia are increasing their political influence in the country as a result of high oil prices. The oil companies' influence represents a challenge to President Vladimir Putin's attempt to limit business influences in politics.
