Consolidation and new platforms key to activity

Article Abstract:

The merger of United News & Media and Carlton Communications was one of several merger and acquisition deals under development in the European traditional media sector in Jan 2000. Venture capital group Apax Partners exited its investment in Ginger Media Group, and the Ginger Media Group assets now seem set to be part of the Scottish Media Group. Other deals attracting attention in Jan 2000 included the link-up of Time Warner and America Online, which has been welcomed by rating agencies.

Deal activity in Leeds set for new heights

Article Abstract:

Large and significant business deals that have occurred in Leeds, England, since Aug, 1997, are described. Television network group Granada Television International Ltd's bid talks with Yorkshire-Tyne Tees Television is the most prominent deal activity of the period. The deal, if it goes ahead, will be worth 614 million pounds sterling. The merger of electronics group Farnell Electronics with US company Premier was another significant transaction. The resulting organisation will sell over one billion pounds worth of electronic components every year.
