Consolidation in the banking sector spreads

Article Abstract:

A list of the cross-border acquisitions concerning Scandinavian companies in 1997 reveals the continuing importance of intra-Nordic deals. However, the biggest deal was the merger of UK company Amersham International with Norwegian medical products company Nycomed, which was worth 1.5 billion pounds sterling. Breakdown by industrial sector reveals that the highest level of activity occurred in the business services sector, with Swedish firm WM-Data making five of the 69 acquisitions. Consolidation in the banking sector included the merger of Finnish bank Merita and Norwegian bank Nordbanken.
