NatWest Markets reported losses of 85 million pounds sterling as a result of interest-rate options that were mispriced. The affair sheds doubt on NatWest's management and internal controls. NatWest's shares have also dropped because of disappointing financial results for 1996.

The last of the Mohicans: British investment banks

Four of the last independent investment banks in UK are determined not to be acquired by foreign banks: Schroders, Flemings, Hambros and N.M. Rothschild. They are successful despite lack of capital due to their niche businesses, funds management and economic advisory roles.
