Construction : rentabilit m diocre/

Article Abstract:

CNC will put the emphasis on fighting work for which no earnings are declared in 1998, an issue which is said to affect one fifth of the sector's turnover in Belgium. The construction business did well in turnover terms in 1997, as more than BFr 1,000bn were reported that year for the first time ever, compared to BFr 935bn in 1996. Thanks to the 13% rise in activity reported by the shell segment, the construction business reported a 5% rise in added value in 1997, while the investemnts went up 7.8% to BFr 771bn. On the other hand, the net operational profitability fell to 3.8% according to CNC, below the level reached when the crisis broke out in the housing business in the 1980s. This low profitability is due to moonlighting and also to the tax and costs context and the overcapacity.
