Continuing a program of change

Article Abstract:

The Philippines successfully weathered the Asian currency crisis much better than its Southeast Asian neighbors and peacefully held national elections as the country celebrates its 100 years of independence in 1998. The new president, Joseph Estrada, told business leaders that he would not introduce dramatic changes to economic policies. The country's sound political system served as the major factor for the relative soundness of the Philippine economy.
