Cooling down Kosovo

Article Abstract:

Serbs remaining in Kosovo, Yugoslavia, should be encouraged to stay there, and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) should seek to protect them. Albanian guerrillas should be disarmed. The displacement of the population from one location tends to mean that people are displaced from elsewhere in the Balkans. The Balkans should be seen as a whole, with inter-ethnic harmony promoted in all of the region. Compensation should be offered if populations have to be separated, and a strong hand is needed, which should be provided by NATO in the case of Kosovo.

Kosovo untamed

Article Abstract:

Conflict in Mitrovica, Kosovo, has led to criticism of France, which is seen by some ethnic Albanians as favoring Serbs. The town is divided, with ethnic Serbs in the north, and non-Serbs have been 'cleansed'. The northern part of Kosovo is the only region where there are still Serb majorities, and this region and areas in eastern Kosovo and Serbia where ethnic Albanians predominate have become sources of conflict. A solution could be found if the borders of Kosovo were altered, but this would create a difficult precedent.
