Starting-time decisions in labor tour scheduling: an experimental analysis and case study

Article Abstract:

Research examining the importance of adequate scheduling of telephone centers starting-time is presented. Particular attention is given to the role played by adequate starting-time scheduling in minimizing the workforce size and increasing the work effectiveness.

Cost analysis of alternative formulations for personnel scheduling in continuously operating organizations

Article Abstract:

The staffing costs of different personnel schedules in continuously operating organizations is examined. Specifically, it is proven that excess labor costs arise from the application of discontinuous formulations for solving continuous mixed workforce tour-scheduling problems. To this end, a local-search heuristic procedure based on simulated annealing is derived and its performance compared to branch-and-bound integer programming.

A sequential integer programming method for discontinuous labor tour scheduling

Article Abstract:

A sequential mixed-integer programming procedure for solving discontinuous tour scheduling problems expressed as general set-covering formulations is introduced. The heuristic is better than linear programming relaxation-based methods because it requires modest hardware and software capabilities and provides near-optimal or optimal solutions to full-time workforce and mixed-workforce problems.
