Cost efficiency in the US steel industry: a nonparametric analysis using data envelopment analysis

Article Abstract:

The US steel industry's share in the world market has declined from almost half of the world production in 1950 to 9.2% in 1982. Studies show that this decline could be attributable to such factors as unfair competition from foreign firms and failure of US domestic firms to introduce technological innovations. The overall cost efficiency in the US steel industry from 1958 to 1986 was estimated. Empirical results indicate that a substantial decrease in production cost could have been achieved by removing technical and allocative inefficiencies.
