Cramming classes

Article Abstract:

Tam Sheung-wai, director of the Hong Kong Open Learning Institute, believes that distance learning will be one of the main education systems in the 21st century in Hong Kong, which has a shortage of college places. According to the director, distance learning will be inexpensive for the country and will suit the hard-working young Honk Kong adults who can continue working whilst studying in their spare time. The institute has 20,000 students, who are using computers more and more for their studies, accessing the computer bulletin board to contact tutors.

Accidents will happen

Article Abstract:

Recent and highly publicized international financial failures demonstrate the riskiness of the current financial climate, created largely by rising US interest rates. Those highly leveraged and dependent on debt are finding the downside of derivatives, made glamorous when interest rates fell. Furthermore, deregulation and internationalization are lowering debt ratings and forcing more risk-taking worldwide. Cautious care in investing and using the services of large account managers are better tactics in such an environment.

Micro Merrill: Hong Kong

Article Abstract:

US investment bank Merrill Lynch's purchase of British broker Smith New Court gives Merrill the London presence it wanted as well as a more complex constellation of Asian relationships. The most immediate problem will be merging corporate cultures, especially challenging since the 1986 revamping of London's financial markets, but not too difficult in this case. Overlapping capacity in Japan may force out some staff there. In Asia's smaller secondary markets, however, Merrill may find a real boon.
