Promises, promises

Article Abstract:

China faces a looming crisis as its population ages faster than its economy improves. The current pension system is unworkable, and provincial and city administrators are implementing a perplexing tangle of local plans. Usually children support aged parents, but increased mobility and reduced family size make this unlikely to continue. Meanwhile, a general social-insurance plan is likely to deal first with unemployment. Cities are asking Western firms to pay 18%-30% of salaries into plans with no defined benefits.

Article Abstract:

Hong Kong's Vitasoy International is trying to manage its public relations and cut its losses after issuing a widespread recall of its soy milk following complaints that it was often sour. Such a product recall is uncommon among Hong Kong's companies. Vitasoy issued the recall promptly, even after some of the causes of the sourness had been discovered and mended. Some public relations professionals said the company should have been more open about the recall initially.
