Help comes in a package

Article Abstract:

Director-general of Sri lanka's Board of investment (BOI), Vass Gunawardane believes that it is not enough to provide incentives to foreign investors and stresses the need for providing an efficient work environment. BOI attempts to do this by avoiding red tape and facilitating the work of foreign investors. Investors should consider features such as the quality of labor and bureaucracy when deciding on a country. Gunawardane believes that the new Sri Lankan government's commitment to free-trade will help the national economy.

Winds of change

Article Abstract:

Under President Chandrika Kumaratunga, in an effort to open and spur on the economy, Sri Lanka is privatizing many of the assets it nationalized 30 years ago. Free-market policies and private-sector leaders in govt posts are creating encouraging improvements, such as a declining exchange rate and inflation half what it was a year ago. State dominance of the finance sector still creates problems, however. The govt is advancing on Tamil rebel positions and is otherwise stable despite a vocal opposition.
