The impact of defects on a process with rework

Article Abstract:

The effects of defects in a production process characterized by 100% inspection followed by rework were investigated. The number of defects produced by the manufacturing process was modelled as a random variable with any general discrete distribution, and the impact of defect levels on the production lead time, work-in-process inventory, yield and material handling costs for different defect levels were determined. Management policies for short-term control decisions are presented. A budget-allocation method for process control improvements are also proposed to meet the long-term goal of defect level minimization.

Integrating production lotsizing, inspection, and rework decisions: useful models and applications

Article Abstract:

The European Journal of Operational Research provided a special issue dedicated to the integration of core manufacturing processes and decisions. The call for papers was answered by industrial practitioners and academic researchers alike. Their papers dealt with the interaction and integration of various manufacturing processes such as the effects of rework on system performance, error recovery strategies, procurement strategies, inspection station location and production lot sizes with random yields.

Processing networks with planned inventories: tandem queues with feedback

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to continue the work started by Y. Lee and P. Zipkin on tandem queues with planned inventories, which refer to production of intermediate and finished goods for storage in anticipation of demand. A tractable approximation scheme was developed to understand the effect of the occasional production of defective units which must be reworked or discarded. The results show that poor quality wastes production capacity and thus degrades performance.
