Creating a global player

Article Abstract:

US telecommunications company MFS Communications Co.'s $2 billion acquisition of national Internet service provider UUNET Technologies was one of the largest telecommunications mergers in the US during 1996. MFS realized the importance of the Internet in late 1995 and approached UUNET because of its national business-customer base and its enlarging presence in Europe. Subsequently, MFS was acquired by WorldCom, the US's fourth largest long-distance provider, for $14 billion to create the country's first integrated long-distance and local telephone company.
