Crooked cops

Article Abstract:

There is particular concern among ordinary people in China about corrupt police officers, who often have links with the judiciary. Corrupt police and judicial officials are often not punished, and this has reduced public confidence in law-enforcement agencies. The Chinese Communist Party has begun taking firmer action to tackle this problem, and now permits the state-controlled media to expose police and judicial abuses.

Impotent potions: 'Anti-Aids' elixirs confound regulators and threaten lives in China

Article Abstract:

Elixirs claiming to kill HIV, the human immunodeficiency virus that leads to Aids, are widely available in China. Some of the products bear official-looking stamps of approval, but the products are bogus, according to health officials. HIV infections in China have increased to about 300,000 since the first recorded case in 1985, and the best method of combating Aids is to provide education on how the disease is spread.

The resignation of Therese Shaheen who was the head of the Washington office of the United States embassy in Taiwan is reported. Taiwan foreign minister also tendered his resignation owing responsibility for Shaheen's downfall that complicated United States diplomacy.
