Crystal clear

Article Abstract:

The Cambridge Crystallographic Data Centre has a masterpiece of a new building as a result of collaboration between the Centre's director, Olga Kennard, and Danish architect Erik Sorensen. The building had to fit onto an awkward-shaped site in the Newtown area of Cambridge. The structure is steel-framed with masonry cladding. There is exceptional concern for detail, particularly inside, where desks and storage units were designed by Sorensen. Sorensen charged less than the RIBA-recommended scale and, although he visited the site regularly, he liaised with the contractor by fax.

Client satisfaction

Article Abstract:

Olga Kennard, scientific director of the Cambridge Crystallographic Data Centre, and Danish architect Erik Christian Sorensen formed a creative partnership to create a new building for the Centre. Sorensen is a professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. He had visited Britain in 1959 to designe a house for Kennard and she chose him to design the new Crystallographic Centre building. The result is an outstanding building using a proportion of Danish materials and filled with well-designed objects.
