Curbing the car: transport

Article Abstract:

Britain's transportation policy is expected to undergo restructuring, in a desire to reduce dependence on cars and fight congestion and pollution. Gavin Strang, the transport secretary, is scheduled on July 22, 1997 to announce his decisions on several controversial road plans. The government's draft policies reflect support of pilot projects, such as local governments allowing toll roads; increased rail freight; and promotion of bus use.

No through road: motorway pricing

Article Abstract:

Transportation secretary John MacGregor, who was once with the Treasury, proposes charging drivers for motorway expansion and maintenance in the form of use fees. This is a good idea, but the government must be careful not to charge so much that they price drivers off the motorways.
