DEFENCE MINISTRY PLANS PROJECT TO SAVE HIMALAYAS

Article Abstract:

The Government of India is planning to launch an environmental programme called Save the Himalayas under the umbrella of Defence Ministry. The project aims at checking exploitation of Himalayas and taking up afforestation schemes. The Planning Commission and the Prime Minister have already cleared the project. The Planning Commission has assured separate fund allocation for the project in the coming budget. The project will also provide employment to retired defence personnel from the hills, who have expertise in the field. Apart from afforestation schemes, the project also envisages rehabilitation of locals to stop further erosion of Himalayas. (um)(psr)

8 DEFENCE R&D LABS TO BE OPENED UP

Article Abstract:

The Indian Ministry of Defence has opened 8 research laboratories of Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to the private sector. It will set up six task forces for partnerships in research, production and marketing of military equipment. The task forces will identify the areas of partnership with DRDO. The three areas which would be opened to the private sector are dual technology, bio-technology and software engineering. (rk)

DRDO TAKES UP PRODUCTION OF PILOTLESS AIRCRAFT

Article Abstract:

The Defence Research Development Organisation has started a limited series production of an indigenous pilotless target aircraft called Lakashya. This is for the usage of the air force, the navy and the army. Two air craft are to be delivered to the air force by August 1998. The technology for producing the aircraft is to be transferred to Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd to meet further requirements of the defence services. (khr)
