DENMARK: ANIMAL FEED PRODUCER TO BE SUED

Article Abstract:

Legal proceedings are to be started against the Danish animal feed producer Scanmill in June. The company's former director is charged with falsification of documents after having sold animal feeds, the contents of which did not correspond to the list of ingredients. The feed was meant for minks, poultry and pigs. The products were exported to Eastern Europe during the 1994-1999 period. Scanmill chairman Ole Ulso expects Plantedirektoratet to grant the company a license for continued operations. Gorm Lunn of Plantedirektoratet, however, is not so sure about this. Lunn demands positive proof that Scanmill is not cheating with the animal feed ingredients before giving its approval. The goods sold to Eastern Europe contained mostly meat and bone meal and not fish meal as was promised.

As it is now, the industry can remove dioxin from fish oil but not fish meal. This advice is thought to mean that a new EU directive regarding dioxin limits is under consideration.
