DENMARK: FDB'S SALE OF BAKERY UNIT PROFITABLE

FDB, the Danish Co-operative Retail and Wholesale Society, has boosted its earnings by selling off units, writes the paper. The latest sell-off was the bakery unit, De Danske Brodfabrikker, The profit from the deal amounted to DKr257mn (US$31mn). By comparison, FDB's operating profit in 2000 was DKr99mn. Paul Dines, information manager at FDB, says the sale of the bakery unit was not carried out with the view of bolstering results.

Denmark: Two bakeries per week shut down

Article Abstract:

Two bakeries per week, about 100 on an annual basis, have to shut down in Denmark owing to bad profitability, says Bjarne Sonderhod, chairman of Guldbageren, the biggest bakery chain in Denmark. There are about 1,200 bakeries in Denmark. 20% of them are facing both unprofitability and negative equity capital. Reasons behind the negative development are successful industrial bakeries and the increasing bake-off market.
