DENMARK: RETAILERS WILL COMPETE WITH PHARMACIES

Article Abstract:

Danish retailers FDB, Dansk Supermarked and Matas believe that they will conquer half of the market for pharmaceuticals when the market is privatised on October 1. FDB estimates its sales to total DKr400 mn (US$45 mn) while Matas expects sales to total DKr100-200 mn. Dansk Supermarked has not revealed any estimations yet. Chairman Paul Bundgaard in Danmarks Apotekerforening (Danish Pharmaceutical Organisation) does not fear a drop in pharmacies sales after October 1. Bundgaard criticizes the retailers aims. Pharmaceuticals are not to be compared with ordinary food products and the aim should not be to maximize sales, says Bundgaard, who believes that this could increase consumption.
