DENMARK: GOVT'S ACTION PLAN FOR UMTS LICENSES

Article Abstract:

At least two foreign companies are expected to make bids for the Danish UMTS licenses, according to the Danish IT and Research Minister and the Danish Telecommunications Authority. This means that one of the four leading mobile telephony companies in Denmark i.e. TDC, Sonofon, Telia and Mobilix would have to pave way for the newcomer, which according to rumours is a German company. The Danish government has said that the principle of affirmative action will be applied to new companies when bidding for 3G licenses. The Danish government has pledged to grant four Danish UMTS licenses by the end of October. The licenses will cost at least DKr0.5bn (US$60mn).

DENMARK: CRITICISM OF UMTS AUCTIONS

Article Abstract:

Dansk Handel & Service (DH&S), the national organisation of the Danish retail and service industry, levels criticism of the Danish government's plans to organise auctions for the UMTS licenses. According to the organization, this would be harmful to the Danish industry as telecoms companies would immediately make their clients pay for the costs for acquiring UMTS licenses. Danish politicians claim, however, that the revenues from the sale of licenses could be used to pay off the national debt and thus to reduce taxes in general.
