FRANCE: ECO-EMBALLAGE AND PRIVATE LABELS

Article Abstract:

for their private labels as of 1999. This decision is based on 'Intermarche jurisprudence' which says that the packagers must pay for the private labels. The Leclerc retail chain has decided to continue to pay its contribution, because it feels responsible for its private labels. Large retailers' and mail-order houses' contribution to Eco-Emballages has been dropping steadily. They represented about 15% of Eco-Emballages' budget in 1998, compared with 20% in 1997. This may come to less than 5% in 1999. Eco-Emballages still intends to recycle 75% of household waste by the end of 2002. It expects that 27mn inhabitants will be sorting their waste in 1999 compared with 19mn in 1998, up 50% from 1997.

Comment:

All retail chains except for Leclerc have decided to stop paying their contribution to Eco-Emballages
