AUSTRIA: LESS CROP LOSSES IN 2001

Article Abstract:

So far in 2001, the Austrian specialist insurer Osterreichische Hagelversicherung has recorded claims towards hail insurance policies worth Sch 200mn. Claims worth Sch 60mn were made against policies against crop damage by drought. In year 2000 the claims amounted to Sch 879mn. In 2001 960,000 hectares, or 74% of Austria's agricultural cultivation area, is protected against damage by hail. In year 2000 the total was 915,000 hectares. The area covered against losses due to drought increased 14% to 441,000 hectares in 2001. The premium income of Osterreichische Hagelversicherung in 2001 increased 1.3% to just under Sch 640mn.

AUSTRIA: RECORD DAMAGE BY HAIL

Article Abstract:

Although the main season for hailstorms is still ahead, Osterreichische Hagelversicherung reports record damage caused by hail so far in Austria in year 2000. The total amounts to about Sch 900mn, which is the highest in the company's 55-year history. About 90% of the 133,000 hectares of agricultural area damaged by hail is covered by insurance. In order to meet the damage claims, Osterreichische Hagelversicherung has to resort to its reserves.

AUSTRIA: KAPRUN ACCIDENT AND GENERALI

Article Abstract:

The insurance company Generali says that it will suffer a damage of no more than Sch 10mn due to the recent funicular railway accident in Kaprun. The insured value of the policy of the operator amounted to Sch 350mn, most of which is covered by reinsurance.
