AUSTRIA: VERBUND MAY WITHDRAW FROM KELAG

Article Abstract:

Verbund is considering to sell its 35% stake in the Carinthian power utility Kelag. This follows the announcement of RWE, the big German energy group, to buy initially a 49% stake in Karntner Energieholding (KEH), the holding company of Kelag. RWE has the option to raise its stake to a majority holding. Verbund's policy has been to hold only participatory shareholdings that secure it a say in the company concerned.

ITALY: VERBUND TO BUY POWER STATIONS FROM ENEL?

Article Abstract:

The Austrian power company Verbundgesellschaft is interested in taking over power stations from Italian Enel. The Italian monopolist has to reduce production by 50% by 2001 to allow competition on the market. Verbund is to submit takeover bids through Energia, joint venture with the Italian financial holding company CIR. Verbund is interested especially in hydropower stations in South Tyrol.

AUSTRIA: VERBUND BUYS STYRIAN POWER COMPANY

Article Abstract:

Verbund has taken over the electricity network of the Styrian mining company GKB for Sch 127mn. It thus beat the regional Styrian power company Steweag.
