Stagnant demand, weak performance and intense competition characterized the retail market for dairy products in the major European markets of France, Italy, the UK, Germany and Spain during the 1991-1995 period. Low-fat, low-calorie products became more popular among consumers as a result of health trends. At the same time, own-label products also gained prominence. Italy experienced real growth while France, Germany and Spain encountered real value losses. Governments closely protected international dairy markets through price supports, quotas and import tariffs.

Article Abstract:

The retail market for furniture and furnishings in France was analyzed, covering the categories furniture, carpets and other floorcoverings and household textiles and soft furnishings. The results showed that the market increased by 1.2% in 1998, a 0.9% increase from 1997. Of the three categories studied, furniture was the largest sector of the market with value sales amounting to FF55,193 million in 1998. The market is expected to grow by 2.0% between the years 1998 and 2001.
