Dancing with the dragon

Article Abstract:

China is courting the Cambodian government through a range of initiatives, but the relationship may be dangerous for Cambodia. The Chinese are aiming for regional dominance and economic gain, and Cambodia presents an easy target. The Chinese are offering inducements including investment, military assistance and aid. Hun Sen's government in Cambodia is grateful for the assistance, but Chinese patronage may cause Cambodia to suffer in the long-term by delaying reforms which would attract foreign investment.

Staying power

Article Abstract:

Cambodian Co-Premier Hun Sen's decision to expel Taiwanese ambassadors in Jul 1997 did not seem to make business sense when Taiwanese businesses have invested more than $300 million in Cambodia. However, the public gesture pleased the Chinese government, which is important to Cambodia when it is expecting GDP to fall to around 1.5% in 1997 and, at the same time, Hun Sen continued to build private relationships with Taiwanese companies.
