Article Abstract:

Sir Ti Liang Yang, chief justice of Hong Kong, has announced that he is a candidate for the post of Hong Kong's chief executive. This bid is likely to be well-received by China since it introduces competition into the contest for the post. The most popular contenders are Tung Chee-hwa and Anson Chan, and they will be under pressure to clarify their intentions toward competing for the post. Yang is seen as acceptable by some sources since he is not likely to be affected by commercial conflicts of interest and has legal experience. Critics are concerned about his lack of strong links with the business community of Hong Kong.

Loud silence

Article Abstract:

Hong Kong's director of immigration Laurence Leung resigned suddenly from his post in July 1996. His departure is said to have been for personal reasons but Hong Kong's legislature was dissatisfied with the explanation, pressing for public hearings to investigate why the case was handled with such secrecy. Rumors suggest that Leung had helped people with fraudulent documents emigrate and immigrate. Whatever the reason, the Hong Kong government's secrecy could have a detrimental effect on business confidence in the colony, which is set to return to Chinese rule in 1997.

A midsummer night's dream

Article Abstract:

The official and popular ceremonies accompanying Britain's handover of Hong Kong to Chinese control at midnight on June 30, 1997, is described. Celebration of the moment of transition is similar to that of the New Year's arrival, though the transfer of keys and the raising and lowering of appropriate flags is more solemn. In all, the transfer goes smoothly, albeit with some surprises, and authorities are relieved by its uneventfulness.
