China reins in its supporters

Article Abstract:

China has made efforts not to intervene in the affairs of Hong Kong since it was handed over to China. Convergence of the two systems would make interference more likely, and there is convergence when politicians from Hong Kong serve on bodies in mainland China. Some politicians are also legislators in Hong Kong, and have a voice in both China and Hong Kong. There used to be a prohibition against people serving in the Legislative Council and in another legislature. This prohibition should be reinstated to avoid conflicts of interest.

Tung fosters Chinese identity

Article Abstract:

Hong Kong's chief executive, Tung Chee-hwa, has emphasised links with China and the need to cooperative. Hong Kong political life has become more low-key, and the emphasis is on business as usual. He has also decided that Mandarin is to be taught in Hong Kong schools. He is right to focus on the need for cooperation with China, but there are dangers in taking the emphasis on Chinese culture too far. Hong Kong has benefited from its cosmopolitan identity and the English-speaking population makes a major contribution to the economy.
