Data dilemma

Article Abstract:

Internet providers are proliferating in Indonesia thanks to relatively easy entry, high profit margins, and a relaxed but poorly informed govt attitude. IndoInternet has 2000 subscribers after seven months and plans rapid expansion, Sprintnet and MCI connections offer linkages, and another direct Internet connection is imminent. Many activists are exploring encryption methods as a safeguard against future govt intrusion. On-line information about Indonesia and related chat groups are also expanding quickly.

Seed money: poverty scheme fuels both enterprise and red tape

Article Abstract:

Indonesia's new IDT anti-poverty program is proving to be remarkably successful in some ways but many of its consequences are unintentional. The $9000 grants to groups of villagers have inspired many to launch or expand entrepreneurial activities, but are also leading to excessive repayment demands, child labor, and threats to traditional culture. The freedom local groups have to set loan and repayment standards are also encouraging grass-roots political attention, possibly wiht lasting repercussions.
