De-tangling the economy

Article Abstract:

Experts looking into the Polish bureaucratic system are fearful their work will take too long to complete and some of their suggestions will not be followed by those making new legislation. The expert teams were set up by Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Leszek Balcerowicz. He saw the need to make changes to the complex bureaucratic system. The teams include government workers and experts in various fields of activity, such as the law and taxation. There is concern changes to legislation will be carried out by officials and not by the investigating teams.

Kings of the new economy

Article Abstract:

A survey reports that the fastest growing companies in the US are those which are information technology based, or offer health care or provide energy. Some basic principles are outlined which may explain why they are successful and continue to grow. Firms need to be flexible about their products and ensure that they can upgrade or redesign their products to stay ahead of the competition. Make sure that demand for the service is steady and that the management structure is not top-heavy. It is also important that the products are of high quality and have a good reputation.

Manufacturing an economy

Article Abstract:

There have been very high levels of merger and acquisition activity in the West Midlands region of the UK over recent years. Questions are now being raised about whether the region's economy will be able to continue to sustain such high levels. The strength of the pound could have a negative impact on exports, and thus on the manufacturing industry, on which the region's economy continues to rely heavily. Furthermore, very low unemployment levels are bringing skills shortages. However, it seems likely that the region's economy will continue to expand.
