Lakshmi Mittal and his son Aditya Mittal, owners of steel companies Ipsal International NV and LMN Holdings NV, are planning a merger between Ipsal, LMN, and International Steel Group Inc. of Richfield, Ohio. If the consolidation proceeds, the newly formed Mittal Steel Co. would be one of the largest steel producers in the world.

Australian iron ore firm Midwest Corp. announced a potential transaction, leading to speculation that China's Sinosteel Corp. may be making an all-cash bid to counter an already existing offer made by Murchison Metals Ltd. It is believed that the Sinosteel offer values Midwest at $1.11 bil.

Outokumpu to buy Avesta, creating giant steelmaker

Outokumpu Oyj, Finland-based mining and metals group, announced it would acquire Sweden's Avesta Sheffield AB in a billion-dollar (Euro1.13 billion) agreement to create the second biggest stainless steel manufacturer in the world.
