Debt message spawns a waiting game

Article Abstract:

Banking industry representatives and businessmen remain skeptical of the Indonesian government's plan to alleviate the country's financial crisis by the introduction of banking guarantees and debt-solution strategies. Indonesian firms still have a total of about $65 billion in foreign debt to repay without direct help from the government. Though some sectors are doubtful that the plan will do much, some banks have expressed relief that a framework for debt servicing has been created.

Article Abstract:

The Singapore government has eliminated the 40% limit on foreign ownership of domestic banks and is allowing foreign banks to gain a share in the domestic retail banking market. The announcement was made on May 17, 1999 by Deputy Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong. Immediately, shares of Singapore banks increased in value right after the announcement. However, the Monetary Authority of Singapore will implement a series of new measure to make sure that there is appropriate bank control.
