Article Abstract:

Atlantic Richfield Co (Arco) has discovered a natural gas field off Indonesia but Arco and Pertamina, its Indonesian partner, have maintained secrecy around the find. Industry sources see the secrecy as stemming from a desire not to present competition for another gas project, the Natuna field. Pertamina is seeking contracts to export gas from this field to S Korea and Japan. The new Wiriagar Deep gas find is not as large as Natuna but is more accessible. Arco has stated that it will assess the commercial viability of Wiriagar by mid-1997.

Long arm of the law: Unocal faces novel suit over its Burma activities

Article Abstract:

Unocal faces legal action from the exiled government of Burma over a project to build a pipeline to Thailand and the development of a gas field. The plaintiff alleges that Unocal is involved in the project with the military junta as its partner, and the junta is involved in repression, money laundering and abuse of human rights. The issue of whether forced labor is involved in the project is likely to be dealt with if the case is tried.
