Deja vu: violence returns to troubled East Timor

Article Abstract:

Rising violence and turmoil in East Timor recall the situation before the Santa Cruz massacre there in 1991. So-called 'ninja' groups of masked terrorists have roamed the streets, but no firm reports identify their backers or interests. Local politicians claim they are paid by military intelligence seeking to subdue resistance. Incidents died down in mid-Feb 1995, as the military investigates the deaths of six men the army identifies as rebels. Western embassies played a key role in launching the investigation.

Fresh blood: new generation of Timor militants arises

Article Abstract:

Trouble over East Timor both overseas and in the annexed province itself continues to plague the Indonesian govt. Now it looks like militants are recruiting more young members, and internal tensions that encouraged the 1991 massacre in Dili are still in place, according to a United Nations analyst. UN-sponsored talks among Timorese factions are promising but do not include the main rebel faction. The Indonesian govt remains opposed to giving East Timor special status, and will not withdraw troops as planned.

Soft approach: new calls for a fresh tack on East Timor

Article Abstract:

Indonesia is facing negative publicity for its policy on East Timoe following the selection of Bishop Carlos Felipe Ximines Belo and Jose Ramos-Horta, exiled proponent of independence, for the Nobel Peace Prize. The contentious issue of East Timor, the former Portuguese colony, requires new discussion to resolve cultural and economic aspects. Indonesian and Portuguese negotiations planned for late December 1996 are hoped to produce more than the previous stale rhetoric.
