Delays in Pakistan

Article Abstract:

The planned sales of several state companies in Pakistan are being delayed. Pakistan Telecommunications Corporation (PTC), Karachi Electricity Supply Corporation (KESC), Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Ltd (SNGPL), Sui Souther Gas Corporation (SSGC) and United Bank Ltd (UBL) are all scheduled for disposal during 1995, but certain manufacturing plants have had their scheduled sales delayed partly due to the inability of the Privatisation Commission to close previous deals.

Pakistan runs into unforeseen difficulties

Article Abstract:

There have been setbacks to Pakistan's privatisation programme, including the deal under which Basharahil Group of Saudi Arabia was to take a 26% stake and management control of United Bank Limited (UBL). There were concerns by the Bank of England's supervision and surveillance division about several aspects of UBL's business, and the Privatisation Commission had doubts about Basharahil's credentials.

Pakistan on target despite snags

Article Abstract:

Many planned utility disposals in Pakistan are behind schedule due to the politicised nature of the denationalisation process. The sale of part of Pakistan Telecommunications Corporation (PTC) is not likely to be finalised before the middle of 1996. The disposal of the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA)'s Kot Addu thermal power plant is also being schedule.
