Delays to disabled access

Article Abstract:

Despite new legislation in the UK, rights of access for the disabled have not been forthcoming. The Labour government, whose election manifesto committed it to ending discrimination for disabled people, is apparently set to drop the planned compliance certification system for Section 21 of the Disability Discrimination Act which requires service providers to do all they can to comply with the law.

Lifting the lid

Article Abstract:

An assumption that affected number of recommendations in the revised Building Regulations Approved Document Part M (ADM 2004) is that things that are convenient for independent wheelchair users would also suit other building users. The independent wheelchair users use wheelchairs generally of a standard size.

Article Abstract:

Designers of public buildings must now make them accessible to disabled people, but this requirement can actually discriminate against the majority. Groups which suffer from discrimination include parents with children in pushchairs, and women forced to queue to use public toilets.
