Democratic dilemma

Article Abstract:

Public anger at politicians in Thailand seems to be increasing, reflected in the press, unprecedented remarks from the King Bhumibol Adulyadej, and the powerful bureaucracy. However, pressure for change is found predominantly in Bangkok, while the countryside seems content with political patronage, creating what some call two democracies. Potential conflict between them could cause enormous harm. Meanwhile, the ruling party seems unable to deal with chronic infrastructure problems. Reform proposals are discussed.
