Opposition glue

Article Abstract:

A loose political group backed by the Japanese Trade Union Confederation (Rengo) will be the second largest opposition group in the upper house of Japan's Diet if it holds 28 seats after the Jul 1992 election. This will make it harder for Prime Minister Kiichi Miyazawa and the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) to pass legislation and may force them to form a coalition strategy against Rengo. Speaking metaphorically, Rengo Pres Akira Yamagishi refers to Rengo as the glue that will unite non-communist opposition parties into a single party that will break the LDP's 37-year hold on the legislature.

A new ball game

Article Abstract:

The Cold War's end will affect both the US-Japan relationship and internal Japanese politics. The lack of a Soviet threat means that the US and Pres Clinton will no longer accept Japanese economic domination as necessary. Moreover, the post-World War II monopoly of political power held by Japan's Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) for 38 years is likely to dissolve due to corruption and scandals. LDP can no longer use the Cold War to justify staying in power despite its obvious internal decay. Electoral reforms will probably end the LDP in its current form within three to four years.

Lonely eminence: foreign minister's resignation leaves Miyazawa exposed

Article Abstract:

Japanese Foreign Minister Michio Watanabe's resignation due to poor health in Apr 1993 has increased Prime Minister Kiichi Miyazawa's chances for re-election in Oct 1992 because Watanabe was the main rival for leadership of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). However, the refusal of ex-Finance Minister Tsutumo Hata to accept Watanabe's post probably indicates that Hata will run against Miyazawa. Moreover, former LDP leader Shin Kanemaru's withdrawal from politics due to scandal has undermined Miyazawa's support.
