Foreigners out of a job

Article Abstract:

The Employment Services Act implemented by Taiwan in Apr 1992 may disable the country from pursuing economic development. Deemed as inappropriate and intractable, the labor policy has resulted in the deportation of entertainers, workers and laborers, prompting fears of a possible shortage in technical personnel. Management is also affected since foreign businessmen in Taiwan lost their right of residence under the new law. Postponement of the policy's implementation has been requested pending clarifications and guidelines for legalizing alien status.

Hiring and firing

Article Abstract:

Taiwan's legislature is set to approve new labor guidelines which will open doors to foreign laborers from Southeast Asian countries. This is a major labor policy shift aimed at alleviating Taiwan's manpower shortage, which has caused delays in infrastructure construction. However, foreign labor wages are set at a minimum of NT$11,040 a month, 50% lower than the local wages. Furthermore, foreign workers will find it difficult to behave according to Taiwan's stringent behavioral code, which some think amount to a violation of human rights.

White-collar waiver

Article Abstract:

Foreign white collar workers in Taiwan are criticizing the strict enforcement by government agencies of the Employment Services Act. The criticism is centered on the rough treatment of foreign workers by Taiwanese police. The criticism has forced the government to draft new rules that would give foreign professionals the right to work in their respective chosen fields. Additionally, the government is seriously considering raising the minimum wage for foreign workers, despite strong protests from industries.
