Denmark: Banestyrelsen may fetch DKr1bn by selling unit

Article Abstract:

Banestyrelsen, the Danish National Railway Agency, could pocket DKr1bn by selling its telephony operations under Banestyrelsen Tele. It owns among other things a 14% stake in Orange, the mobile telephony operator. Banestyrelsen's telephony unit, that builds telecoms networks along sleepers, achieved a DKr29mn profit on a turnover of DKr209mn last year. Banestyrelsen's ceo Jens Andersen, says the investment in Orange has never been a strategic investment and makes no secret of the fact that the stake will be sold sooner or later. According to him, Banestyrelsen will adjust its strategy on the assumption that it is a railway company not a telecoms company. It is, however, up to government to decide whether the transmission network and the masts are an integral part of Banestyrelsen or whether they can be sold off.
