Denmark: New conference-centre needed in Copenhagen

Article Abstract:

A new conference-centre is needed if Copenhagen is to keep its position as the sixth largest conference-city worldwide. Even though Bella Center has been enlarged the capacity is still limited and this means that Copenhagen may have to turn down several international conferences in the next year. Last year 97 international conferences with more than 300 participants were held in Copenhagen. This provides a large contribution to the tourist industry, that this year will have a turnover of about Dkr10bn(US$1bn) in the region. The tourist industry has at present about 19, 000 employees in the Copenhagen region. The conference industry also contributes to other lines of business like for instance the IT-sector. The recent tragic events in the US has led to cancellations for the conference-centres, but the effect is not too extensive since the loss in American customers is expected to be compensated by an increase in European customers. Next year the demand for conference facilities is expected to rise.
