IG Metall launches German auto strikes in pay bid

Article Abstract:

German union IG Metall organized several warning strikes, or brief work stoppages, at German automobile manufacturing companies as well as metal and engineering plants in an effort to win wage increases for its members. The first strikes were on Friday when 220,000 walked off of work at BMW AG and DaimlerChrysler AG, and continued on Monday when 11,000 workers walked off the job at Ford Motor Co.'s plant in Cologne. IGM metal demands a 6.5% pay increase for its 2.7 million members, and the employers' federation has offered 2% plus a one-time payment of .5% of their salaries. Mediation is set to resume on Wednesday.
