Denmark: New tax system for imported beer

Article Abstract:

The Danish tax minister is to change the present tax system, which discriminates against imported beer and gives Danish breweries a competitive advantage. Under the present system a Czech Urquell beer for example is classed as a strong beer despite the fact that the alcohol content in it is lower than in a Carlsberg lager. Due to this, the tax on Urquell is also almost 30% higher. The new system with a sliding tax scale coupled with the abolition of the ban on beverage cans is expected to tighten competition in the Danish beer market and make it easier for imported beer brands to capture market share in Denmark. Carlsberg has already taken measures due to the new tax system and has acquired an ownership stake of two thirds in Premium Beer Import, the biggest beer importer in Denmark.
