Denmark: Speculations about Codan

The British newspaper Sunday Telegraph writes that the British group Royal & Sun Alliance (RSA) is considering selling off its 72% stake in the Danish insurance company Codan. This would be part of RSA's plan to raise GBP 800mn for expansion on the insurance market in the next few years, according to the paper. RSA has given up its plan to raise GBP 2bn by selling off its British life insurance operations. However, the Nordic market, fronted by Codan, is still one out of five key areas, RSA recently declared.

DENMARK: ALM. BRAND ACQUIRES PROVINZIAL

Danish insurance company Alm. Brand will acquire German insurance company Pronvizial's Danish operations. The purchase price is DKr275mn (US$33.5mn). Provinzial's Danish operations have been unprofitable and in 1999 the company reported a loss of DKr114mn. According to Jan Hornsberg of Alm. Brand, the synergy effects of the acquisition will amount to around DKr100mn.

Denmark: Re-insurance company for sale
Article Abstract:
Soren Boe Mortensen, the newly-elected MD at the Danish insurance company Alm. Brand, wants to sell off the group's distressed re-insurance company Kjobenhavnske Re. He wants to focus on pension and non-life insurance operations alone. Mortensen says Kjopenhavnske Re and re-insurance are not part of our future strategy.
