Design policies in local plans

Article Abstract:

An examination of UK local development plans from the 1990s reveals that there are a number of ways in which design policies could be improved. Recommendations for design policy construction include the need to consider the social, environmental and functional contexts, along with the traditional focus on visual appearance. The recommendations suggest procedures, including local consultation, which should be incorporated in the design policy formation process.

The role of policy in design appeals

Article Abstract:

The role of policy in design appeals in England during 1994 and 1995 is examined. An analysis of the Inspectorate's decision letters examines the influence of central government guidelines on local plan policies and appeal decisions. It is shown that adopted development plan policies play a greater role than in the past and are important factors in appeals, together with the main features of central government advice.
