Design well and prosper

Article Abstract:

South Korean companies are becoming increasingly aware of the need for very strong industrial design. However, it is hard to convince some manufacturers that they should continue to invest in industrial design, especially in a difficult economic climate. Modern industrial design must bring together expertise from many different specialist fields, and all of these must be taken into consideration if a company is to secure future competitiveness. Some small and medium-sized South Korean concerns have set up design studios, but there is still some evidence of insufficient commitment to industrial design.

Stock options aren't for us

Article Abstract:

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries has decided against providing its employees with stock options. The company feels that stock prices depend on many different factors, and are not always reflective of the efforts made by managers. A stock-option plan will not necessarily prompt a rise in the value of a company's shares, even if the company's profits rise. Stock options have become successful in the US, where they have played a role in boosting employee loyalty. However, they do not seem to be appropriate for Japan's cultural and business climate.

Who said bailout?

Article Abstract:

Sembawang Corp and Singapore Technologies Industrial Corp have emphasized that their merger is a merger of equals. However, some observers feel that the deal is largely motivated by the need to rescue Sembawang, which has accumulated large debts. The company had become unable to play a role in driving the expansion of Singapore business abroad, which the Singapore government regards as very important for large government-connected companies. The merged concern will be the largest infrastructure and engineering company in southeast Asia.
