Developing HRM in foreign-Chinese joint ventures

Article Abstract:

Human resource management (HRM) in foreign-Chinese joint ventures is complicated by differences in legislative environment, culture and organisational structures. However, an awareness of these three factors and an ability to anticipate their effects can help make a joint venture more successful. A field study of 10 foreign-Chinese joint ventures found that recruitment was usually based on application forms and interviews, with psychometric testing rarely used. Joint ventures found it hard to fire staff, and there was little individual performance appraisal.

It is important that all employees understand the aims of the joint venture, that flexible payment systems are used, that investment is made in advertising, that sufficient time is given to planning and that there is a good horizontal flow of information in the organisation. Choosing the right partner is also a key element.
