Meinl Bank AG is to take a decision within the next year about whether to open branches in outlets of Billa and Meinl . While bank branches in supermarkets are common in the US and are being tested in Germany, in Austria they are being tested by Creditanstalt at Shopping City S d. Julius Meinl V says that the bank will continue to concentrate on investment banking and asset management. The customers' portfolio is expected to rise to Sch 23bn in 1998 from Sch 19bn in 1997. Any new branches in supermarkets will focus on self-service with little staff. For 1998 Meinl Bank expects a further increase in profit on ordinary activities from Sch 185mn in 1997 and Sch 96mn in 1996.

Despite the turbulence on the Russian and Asian markets, Erste Bank of Austria will maintain the total number of provisions at Sch 2.3bn in 1998. Provisions for bad debts in Russia are to be increased by Sch 377mn to Sch 579mn by the end of 1998. Altogether the bank's lending in Russia amounts to Sch 1.68bn. Between 1 January and 31 August 1998 the bank's lending in Asia decreased from Sch 9.5bn to Sch 6.68bn. Considerably less than 10% of the total is bad debts.
