Ding dong dollar: Vietnam's currency mandate clouds foreign investment

Article Abstract:

The dollar remains a mainstay in Vietnam's economy despite government efforts there to replace it as fully as possible with the dong. However, with citizens unwilling to trust either the government or its currency, the dollar adds stability and accurate prices, reduces corruption, and reduces foreign-exchange problems for visitors. Between $600 million and $2 billion are apparently in circulation in Vietnam, as well as $3 billion in gold. Some businessmen have abandoned major projects over foreign exchange problems.

Moonlighting medicos

Article Abstract:

An increasing number of physicians and dentists in Vietnam are starting private practices to supplement their incomes. These professionals have been allowed to do so since health-care reforms were introduced in 1989. Doctors who moonlight are motivated by paying for children's educations and keeping up with the rising cost of living. Patients claim that the higher cost of seeing a private physician is worth the added convenience and quality.

Morning in Taiwan: from mandate of heaven to mandate of the people

Article Abstract:

Taiwan President Lee Teng-hui's election victory marks the ascendance among Chinese peoples of open economic and political systems that encourage personal wealth. In Taiwan and Hong Kong they have succeeded spectacularly, but mainland China seems intent on pulling them down to its level rather than forging ahead in their wake. Chinese voters in these places have decisively rejected those candidates who hew most closely to Beijing's line.
